The harder you work, the luckier you get

    Learning as a leader

In conversations with our people, I’m often asked what I believe are the most important qualities for those who aspire to be leaders at Accenture. For me personally, it is the will to win and see possibilities.

A mentor once advised me to focus my time on creating opportunities rather than wallowing in problems. I might not have been the smartest person in the room nor had a unique way of selling work…but I was always an optimist and had the ability to see the positive outcome of any situation, no matter how ugly. I think if there’s any one thing that helps people rise to leadership, it’s optimism and the ability to build a team of people who have the will to win. That kind of attitude is contagious.

Accenture has taught me so much about what it takes to be a leader. I learned the importance of stretching yourself and taking some personal risks. I learned that effective leaders must be good communicators, teachers and role models for living our core values. I learned to listen and to always be willing to accept the bad news along with the good. I learned that developing others is as important as developing yourself.

I also learned the importance of preparation and paying attention to detail. In fact, one of my favorite quotes is from Gary Player, a famous golfer who said, “The harder you work, the luckier you get.”
